How many times did you want to make some recipe, but you didn’t have all ingredients? Once, twice? Probably more often. This happens to many people. However, there are some ingredients which you can make at you home and use them in some of your favorite recipes.
If you are planning to bake bread with buttermilk as the main ingredient, in this recipe we will show you how to make buttermilk. You probably have vinegar or lemons and milk in your kitchen, and that is all you need to make your own buttermilk.
This recipe is easy to make and it only requires 15 minutes. By adding a tablespoon of either vinegar or lemon juice to a cup of milk, you add enough acidity to it that it starts to slightly transform into a tangy curdled milk, which is exactly what we want. If it looks slightly curdled, then you have achieved what you needed the milk to do. On the other hand, if it doesn’t look slightly curdled (like what it looks like when cream or milk goes bad), wait several more minutes.
Another tip to add is to taste the milk. Another thing you are looking for as far as taste is concerned is a noticeable tang to the milk. In case that the tanginess is faint after stirring the milk and tasting it, add another teaspoon of lemon juice or vinegar and wait for about 2 minutes. Buttermilk, which is prepared in the traditional way, is considered beneficial to health since it contains probiotic microbes. It is also soothing to the skin as well as the stomach.
The content of fat found in buttermilk is lower than that of milk because fat is removed during churning. The probiotic nature of buttermilk is purported to improve immunity when taken regularly and be beneficial to the gut. One cup of whole milk contains 8.9 grams of fat and 157 calories whereas one cup of buttermilk contains 2.2 grams of fat and 99 calories. Traces of phosphorus, calcium, potassium and vitamins can be found in buttermilk.
In some countries, buttermilk is a favorite traditional drink during summer, since it is soothing to the stomach and alleviates minor stomach upsets. In India, for example, flavoring ingredients, such as curry leaves, ginger, and coriander leaves are mixed with buttermilk in order to enhance its digestion-aiding properties.
