Meatloaf is a very popular dish in many countries around the globe. It’s very old, too. The recipe is mentioned in the first known cookbook Apicius, back in Roman times, in 5th century.
But, although it has European origins, Meatloaf became an American kitchen classic. It’s as American as apple pie.
In this recipe, I’ll add one more American ingredient to the list: the turkey meat. But it’s not the main reason – turkey meat is a much healthier alternative to beef. And barbecue sauce is here just to spice up the things a bit more, to add flavor and moisture to this family-favorite dinner dish.
So, let’s begin!

BBQ Turkey Meatloaf Recipe
BBQ sauce:
  • ½ cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon apple vinegar
  • ⅓ cup brown sugar
  • ½ onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup Worcestershire
  • ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • ½ teaspoon sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Tabasco
  • salt and pepper
The Meatloaf
  • 1.5 pounds ground turkey
  • 1 large onion, minced
  • 2 whole eggs (or 1 whole egg and 2 egg yolks)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped parsley
  • pinch of salt
  • pepper to taste
  • ¾ bread crumbs
BBQ Sauce
  1. Finely chopped garlic and onion stew on a butter for 3 minutes.
  2. Add remaining ingredients and cook for another 5 minutes.
  3. Take off the fire and set aside to cool.
The Meatloaf
  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In one bowl put all meatloaf ingredients ( grounded turkey, minced onion, egg, salt, pepper, and breadcrumbs ).
  3. Add the one-half of BBQ sauce you've prepared.
  4. Now, use your hands to mix all ingredients together and form a loaf.
  5. Place the mixture into the large baking dish or onto a baking sheet, or into a slightly oiled bread pan.
  6. At the end, spread the remaining BBQ sauce over meatloaf.
  7. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes, slice, garnish with parsley and serve!
